Curriculum may be defined as “all the guided experiences of the child under the direction of the school.” It includes the content of courses of study and also embraces the development of the whole child that is within the scope of the school. In keeping with our school philosophy and objectives, we enable the students of Notre Dame Academy to grow in knowledge and love of God, and of themselves. Religious education is experienced throughout the school day. The school has its own unique characteristics – an environment permeated with the Gospel spirit of love and freedom. The faith formation of a student is an ongoing process. Ideas about God and His world are incorporated into daily classroom activities as the opportunities present themselves. The curriculum is designed with the rigor, meeting the needs of all learners. Instruction in academic areas follows both the directives from the Common Core Framework, California State Frameworks, as well as the Course Objectives from the Diocese of San Diego.
Grades are given out as a reflection of each student’s progress and show where a student’s strengths are and where there is opportunity for improvement. Progress is always our goal and we wish to inspire a passion for learning. An appropriate grading scale is used for each developmental stage and our grading periods are broken into three semesters.
NDA has implemented standards referenced grading (SRG) from Kindergarten through grade 8. Please review the Standards Referenced Grading Parent Teacher Handbook for additional information on the grading philosophy and procedures.
Report Cards are issued three times a year via email to parents or guardian. Parents or guardians also receive a formal Progress Report via email for fifth through eighth graders at week 18 and week 30. The Academy is transitioning into Standards-Referenced Reporting to students and their parents/guardians to provide a more comprehensive report, “measuring students' proficiency on well-defined course objectives.” (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006).
Our Middle School retake policy encourages students to practice the growth mindset. This opportunity allows a student to request to retake a test to continue learning and improve the test grade.
FACTS is our School Management Software. It is a private and secure portal that allows parents to see academic information specific to their children such as attendance, grades, progress reports, report cards, homework, missing assignments, school calendar, school announcements and teacher emails.
